General Knowledge
“If you have knowledge, let others light their candles with it.” Winston Churchill
The General Knowledge Club attracts learners who have a passion for finding out more about the ‘mysterious details’ characterizing our ever-shrinking global village. Drawn mainly from boys in Grades 5, 6 and 7, the Group meets twice a week to improve on their knowledge base. They are encouraged to engage in a wide variety of information sources, from newspapers, books and encyclopaedias to the internet. Board Games and online quiz challenges provide the boys with a highly stimulating and fun way to learn.
The highlight for each boy is when they are given the opportunity to participate in the annual Interschools General Knowledge Quiz Competition. This competition draws primary schools from across the Peninsula and takes place over three rounds (the final round featuring the top 10 schools in the competition). In preparation, the boys are encouraged to develop a specific area of expertise and then share the knowledge content with others in the group. This helps the GK Team to cover a much wider range of possible categories. SACS Junior has a successful track record in the IGK Quiz Competition, having won the trophy on eight occasions since the Competition’s inception in 1983. Our last success came in 2014.
The GK Club also offers our learners the opportunity to actively engage in the world around them through critical discussion and debate as they learn to apply their knowledge in various contexts. Above all, the club illustrates that general knowledge can be ‘cool’.
