Hockey is one of the major winter extra-murals and boys start playing the game from their first year at the school. Grade 1 and 2 boys practice once a week and play mini-hockey. At these practices they learn the basics of the structure of the game and some very basic hockey skills. The Grade 3 boys practice twice a week. The first day each week is used for skills training and on the second day they play mini games against other schools. All the practices and mini games take place on grass. In 2010 we introduced ‘Mini Hockey Fridays’. On these Fridays the boys in Grades 2 and 3 have the opportunity to play mini games and learn new skills on the Astroturf. Grade 1 boys are welcome to join as well. ‘Mini Hockey Fridays’ also incorporate regular skills tests and at the end of the season the boys who have passed these tests receive medals.

Our senior hockey (u10-u13) is very well attended. We have four to five teams per age group. All of our teams have one practice and one match a week and often participate in tournaments. We also host our own annual u10 Hockey tournament.

u10 teams play six-a-side hockey with no goalie, on a quarter field. In u11 and u12 teams play 8-a-side on a half field, with a goalie. The u13A team plays 11-a-side full field hockey, while the B, C and D teams continue to play 8-a-side. Our u13A team takes part in the Cape Schools Hockey Festival each year among other tournaments and festivals.

Hockey at SACS is played at a very high standard and many of our boys make a Western Province or Zonal Team each year. Every year our numbers and enthusiasm grow amongst the boys and coaches alike.
