Foundation Phase Academics
The Foundation Phase, starting with Grade N through to Grade Three, provides the starting blocks for academic learning at the school. Our focus is on Literacy, Numeracy and Life Skills, but the importance of Writing, Reasoning and Critical Thinking ensure that our boys are well-equipped for this ever changing world.
Most of the boys in Grade One will have benefitted from the nurturing environment offered at the SACS ECD Learning Centre, which includes Grades N and R. Most of the learning is through play using creative arts and educational games to facilitate learning. There is also a strong focus on building the learners’ English language skills.
The ethos in the Foundation Phase is based on recognising that every boy is a unique individual. Our aim is to encourage and develop boys to become dynamic, respectful, responsible and innovative learners who are happy and confident.
There are four classes per Grade with approximately 26 boys in each class. English is the LOLT (language of learning and teaching), Afrikaans is the first additional language and IsiXhosa the second additional language. They also have the opportunity to broaden their skills in Art, Music, Physical Education and IT/ Coding under the guidance of Specialist Teachers in these fields.
The Physical Education curriculum focuses on acquiring the appropriate skills and core strength needed for the various sporting codes on offer in our extensive Extramural Programme. This includes compulsory swimming lessons twice a week during the summer terms to ensure every learner is water safe.
The Life Skills programme is facilitated by members of the school`s Education Support Unit (ESU) ensuring that we nurture the emotional development of each boy. Think Equal is a comprehensive Social and Emotional programme where cross-cultural awareness promotes a respect for all individuals. This is implemented throughout the Foundation Phase, followed by Thrive Together taught in the Intermediate and Senior Phase. The ESU also provides learning support, as well as group therapy and individual counseling to boys and staff.
The Thinking Skills programme is taught explicitly once per week. Class teachers continue with the programme for the rest of the year which develops learners’ critical thinking, an understanding of how their brains process information and how to apply Bloom’s Taxonomy in the classroom.
We believe in a strong home-school community where parents are an intrinsic part of our boys’ education. It is our aim that each boy should feel that he and his family belong to the SACS community and we encourage them to participate in the many activities available at the school. By focusing on this holistic education, we strive to prepare our boys to be the best version of themselves.
Foundation Phase Physical Education
At SACS, Physical Education forms an important part of the Foundation Phase curriculum, focusing on the development of well-rounded individuals. The programme is designed to encourage discipline, teamwork, and a lifelong love for physical activity. It’s not only about building strong bodies but also about nurturing strong minds. Our school is privileged to have a well-equipped gymnasium, outdoor fields, and swimming pools. These facilities provide learners with a wide range of sporting opportunities, ensuring that every child can find an activity that resonates with them.
Every learner at SACS is encouraged to participate in physical activities, regardless of where they are in their development. Physical education strives to develop all learners and to encourage them to take risks and try new things. The Physical Education Programme is more than just physical fitness. It recognises the direct link between physical health and mental well-being. Regular physical activity reduces stress, boosts self-esteem, and enhances cognitive function. Through the programme, learners develop resilience, perseverance, and problem-solving skills – qualities that extend far beyond the playing field.
