Summer Sports

Sport features prominently at SACS and we are fortunate to have a wide range of sports facilities and participation at all levels, regardless of expertise and is encouraged by enthusiastic, competently trained coaches.

The intention is to enable each pupil to realise his full academic potential and to develop into a well-balanced, tolerant and socially skilled person, who is able to cope with his ever-changing world.

The SACS motto, Spectemur Agendo, ‘Let us be judged by our actions’, motivates our mission.

The Junior School has 4 grass cricket pitches, 8 cricket nets, 4 rugby fields, aquatic centre, gym hall, mini hockey astro and a main hockey astro, tennis and squash courts.

Summer sport currently offered at SACS includes:

Athletics

SACS offers athletics as a summer sport during the first term only. We hold our annual Athletics Day a few weeks after the start of the school year, featuring a full program of events. Each boy from Grade 1 to 7 is included in the sprint events to encourage participation and foster inter-house spirit.

Following the Inter-house Athletics Day, the best athletes are selected to train for and participate in the annual Inter-school Quadrangular Athletics event a few weeks later. The other participating school in this event are Bishops, Rondebosch, and Wynberg.

Cricket

SACS Junior proudly offers cricket as a summer extramural sport across all grade levels. Boys in Grades 1 and 2 engage in mini-cricket once a week, a time dedicated to teaching them the basic skills and fundamentals through enjoyable, participation-focused activities. In Grade 3, the boys embark on their first competitive mini-cricket matches against other schools, and towards the end of the year, we begin preparing them for hard ball cricket.

Hard ball cricket starts at the under-10 (Grade 4) level, marking the true beginning of the boys’ cricket journeys. Currently, our representation includes six teams in the under-10 league, five in the under-11 league, and four teams each in the under-12 and under-13 leagues.

SACS takes pride in offering top-notch cricket facilities for both practices and matches. The school boasts four grass pitches for matches and eight cricket nets for practice sessions. We are privileged to provide high-quality coaching to cricketers at all levels, thanks to our enthusiastic, dedicated, and committed team of qualified staff and student coaches.

Cricket is a highly popular summer sport at SACS Junior, with over 450 boys participating in what we fondly call the ‘sport of life’. Our cricket program is inclusive of all skill levels, and its success is evident in the growing number of boys eager to play the sport.

Swimming

Swimming is considered a very important part of the sport’s culture at SACS. Boys are encouraged to “learn to swim” and to be waterborne as soon as possible. The motivational SACS Swimming Programme in the Foundation Phase encourages the boys by developing the traditional racing strokes and encouraging general confidence in the water. By Grade Four, boys should be confident and ready for fitness training and water polo. Extramurally, we encourage and offer swimming at different levels with “Improvers”, primarily catering for the development of swimming, and “Squad”, for boys preparing for Gala events. Boys wanting to be in the squad have to be proficient in at least two of the four strokes.

Tennis

Tennis at SACS forms part of our summer extra-mural program and therefore takes place in the first and fourth terms of the year. The school has four tennis courts, which are used for both practices and home matches. Boys in Grades 4 – 7 may play tennis as an extra-mural activity and team selection is based on a ladder system, where players are rated according to strength. Tennis is a popular sport and competition for places is healthy. SACS enters two u13 teams and one u11 team in the league, and they play Top Schools on an invitational basis. Boys from Grades 1 – 7 benefit from professional private coaching throughout the year.

Waterpolo

The SACS Water Polo legacy, originating in 1995 with just one team, has evolved into a vibrant department, now encompassing approximately 200 passionate players from Grades 3 to 7.

Beginning modestly, our water polo community has grown significantly each year. Every Friday afternoon, our 16 teams, ranging from under 10 to under 13, bring to life the spirit of competition in exciting inter-school matches.

At the heart of SACS Water Polo is our world-class pool and training facility. Our state-of-the-art Aquatic Centre, featuring a full-size water polo pool and a shallow training pool, is meticulously designed to nurture skills from the basics to advanced techniques.

Our exceptional coaching team, the driving force behind our aspiring water polo stars, comprises experienced individuals including teachers, esteemed alumni, and skilled students. Their dedication to the sport and commitment to developing talent are the foundations of our department’s success.

A key annual event is the hosting of one of the country’s most significant primary school water polo tournaments every October. This prestigious event, drawing 28 schools nationwide, showcases skill, sportsmanship, and the camaraderie that epitomizes SACS Water Polo.

Saturday mornings at our Aquatic Centre buzz with activity. Our Splash Polo initiative, managed by dedicated alumni and parents, introduces water polo basics to boys from Grade 2 to 7, nurturing a passion for the sport from a young age.

SACS Water Polo is more than just a game; it’s a community that celebrates teamwork, skill development, and the sheer enjoyment of the sport. Dive into the legacy with us, where the spirit of water polo at SACS continues to thrive and inspire.
